What is a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation where you’re experiencing sudden pain, injury, or discomfort that can’t wait for a routine appointment.

If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and get in touch – we’re here to help.

Common dental emergencies we can help with

Severe toothache

Persistent or sharp pain can be a sign of decay, infection, or other dental problems.

Knocked-out tooth

Time is critical – if you’ve lost a tooth, bring it to us as quickly as possible for the best chance of saving it.

Brocken or chipped tooth

A cracked tooth can cause pain or sensitivity and may need immediate repair.

Swelling or infection

Swollen gums or abscesses can be serious and require prompt treatment to prevent complications.

Lost crowns or fillings

We can replace or repair missing restorations to protect your tooth and stop sensitivity.

Bleeding or trauma

If you’ve had an oral injury that won’t stop bleeding, we’ll provide the care you need.

What to do in a dental emergency?

What to do in case of a knocked-out tooth

A knocked-out tooth can feel alarming, but acting quickly can make all the difference in saving it. Here’s what to do:

  • 1. Find the tooth

Carefully pick up the tooth by the crown (the part you chew with). Avoid touching the root to prevent damage to the delicate fibres.

  • 2. Rinse gently

If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently with water. Do not scrub or use soap or chemicals, as this can harm the root.

  • 3. Try to reinsert the tooth

If possible, place the tooth back into its socket. Hold it in place by gently biting down on a piece of gauze or a clean cloth.

  • 4. Keep the tooth moist

If reinserting isn’t possible, keep the tooth moist by placing it in a container of milk or saliva. Avoid letting it dry out, as this reduces the chance of saving it.

  • 5. Get to us quickly

Time is critical. Call us immediately and come to the practice as soon as possible – ideally within 30 minutes. The faster you act, the higher the chances of reattaching the tooth successfully.

Can you see any dentist in an emergency?

In most cases, you can contact any dental practice offering emergency services, even if you’re not a regular patient. It’s best to call ahead to confirm availability and explain your situation so they can accommodate you as quickly as possible.

Can I wait to see a dentist if the pain isn’t severe?

It’s best not to wait. Even mild discomfort could be a sign of a bigger issue, and early treatment can prevent complications.

Will an emergency dentist extract a tooth?

Yes, if extraction is the best solution to relieve your pain or address the issue, an emergency dentist can perform the procedure. However, they’ll first assess whether the tooth can be saved with other treatments, such as a filling, crown, or root canal.

What can I do if tooth pain is unbearable?

If you’re experiencing severe tooth pain, contact a dentist immediately. In the meantime, take over-the-counter pain relief, avoid hot or cold foods, and rinse your mouth with warm salt water to reduce inflammation. A cold compress on the outside of your cheek can also help with swelling.

Will a dentist pull an infected tooth the same day?

In some cases, yes. If the infection is severe and the tooth cannot be saved, an emergency dentist may extract it the same day. However, they might first prescribe antibiotics to control the infection before performing the extraction to minimise risks.
