What is AirFlow?

AirFlow is a professional dental cleaning method that uses a controlled jet of air, warm water, and ultrafine powder to disrupt and remove dental biofilm and surface staining from tooth surfaces. It is applied above and below the gumline and around appliances such as braces, implants, and restorations.

What is GBT (Guided Biofilm Therapy)?

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is a structured, evidence-based hygiene protocol for managing dental biofilm. It sequences plaque disclosure to map where biofilm is present, gentle AirFlow with low-abrasive powder to remove biofilm and surface stains, targeted ultrasonic instrumentation for any remaining deposits, and final verification with personalised home-care guidance.

Inside GBT: how the device delivers a controlled AirFlow® stream.

Benefits of AirFlow hygiene

Deep cleaning

AirFlow removes biofilm and soft plaque above and below the gumline, and around braces, implants and bridges, far beyond what brushing can reach.

Gum disease prevention

Regular AirFlow hygiene disrupts the biofilm that drives gingivitis and periodontitis, helping protect your gums and keep pockets stable.

A brighter smile

Lifts tea, coffee, wine and smoking stains for a naturally brighter, smoother finish—without harsh polishing.

Fresher breath

Reduces odour-causing bacteria so your mouth feels cleaner and fresher for longer.

What is GBT AirFlow process?

Scale & polish vs. AirFlow hygiene

Both treatments clean your teeth and support gum health, but they work in different ways:

  • Scale & polish

Traditional clean using ultrasonic and hand instruments to remove hard tartar (calculus) from tooth surfaces, followed by a polishing paste to smooth teeth.

  • AirFlow hygiene

A warm water, air and ultrafine powder jet that disrupts biofilm and lifts surface stains above and below the gumline and around braces, implants and bridges; any remaining hard deposits can then be finished with targeted ultrasonic scaling.

Is AirFlow suitable if I have sensitive teeth, braces or implants?

Yes. The warm water stream is kinder for sensitivity and the fine jet cleans around braces, retainers, implants and bridges very precisely.

How long does an AirFlow hygiene appointment take?

Typically 30–45 minutes, depending on staining and build-up. Your hygienist will advise if more time is needed.

What is the difference between AirFlow and a scale & polish?

AirFlow uses a warm water, air and ultrafine powder jet to disrupt biofilm and lift stains; scale & polish removes hard tartar (calculus) with ultrasonic/hand instruments. We can combine both where needed.

Will AirFlow make my teeth whiter?

It removes surface stains (tea, coffee, wine, smoking), so teeth often look brighter. It doesn’t change the natural shade like whitening does.

How often should I book AirFlow hygiene?

Most patients benefit every 3–6 months. If you have gum concerns, braces or higher stain build-up, your hygienist may recommend more frequent visits.
